Melissa Oliveira
The Project
Half Australian, half Portuguese, Melissa Oliveira has been living in Europe for the past years (in Portugal and in the Netherlands). She had the privilege of recording her debut CD In my garden in Boston with special guests Greg Osby and Jason Palmer and is currently presenting it using an idiosyncratic line-up which also includes the Portuguese guitar, turntables and visuals. In an innovative way, especially in the world of jazz, Melissa Oliveira presents a show that, despite being multifaceted, remains faithful to the principles of this style. Consider the Portuguese guitar, which instead of being used in a strictly traditional manner, is also entitled to jazzy melodies and harmonies as a mandatory part of the arrangements made for this project. Yet, the fusion of styles and instruments doesn’t stop here. Another member of the project is JAM who uses turntables in an interactive way so that even audio-visual solos are possible thus resulting in no two shows being alike by maintaining the spirit of jazz in an unconventional format with this extra visual layer.

Bio
Melissa Oliveira was born in Australia and at the age of thirteen went to Portugal. She began her musical studies when she was a teenager at a conservatory of classical music but later on she decided to submerge herself in the world of jazz. In 2007 she was accepted at ESMAE – a College of Music in Porto, Portugal – in jazz (voice). In 2009 she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music. After studying the art of jazz and scat singing by transcribing the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Kurt Elling, Bobby McFerrin, she ventured on composing her own songs and arranging her favorite tunes by Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Keith Jarrett and soon discovered her passion for writing lyrics and vocalese. While in Boston she recorded her debut CD “In my garden” with special guests Greg Osby and Jason Palmer. In 2011 she was accepted at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague to pursue a master's degree in jazz performance and completed it in 2013. Since recording her debut album she has been touring regularly in countries such as Australia, France, Luxemburg, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Melissa Oliveira, luso-australiana, atualmente a residir na Holanda, teve o privilégio de gravar o seu primeiro CD In my garden em Boston com convidados especiais Greg Osby e Jason Palmer e neste momento está a apresentar este trabalho utilizando uma formação idiossincrática que inclui também a guitarra portuguesa, turntables e efeitos visuais. De maneira inovadora, especialmente no mundo do jazz, Melissa Oliveira apresenta-se com um espetáculo que apesar de mutifacetado não deixa de ser fiel aos princípios criadores deste estilo. Vejamos a guitarra portuguesa, que em vez de ser utilizada de maneira estritamente tradicional, tem também direito a melodias e harmonias jazzísticas como parte obrigatória dos arranjos feitos para este projeto. No entanto a fusão de instrumentos e estilos não fica por aí, neste projeto é também membro integrante J.A.M. que utilizando as turntables de maneira auditiva mas também visual interage de maneira a que, também neste instrumento, solos audio-visuais sejam possíveis, fazendo com que não hajam dois concertos iguais e que o espírito do jazz se mantenha mesmo em formas inusitadas.

Bio
Melissa Oliveira nasceu na Austrália tendo vindo para Portugal aos 13 anos. Começou os seus estudos na área da música clássica num conservatório e mais tarde descobriu o mundo do jazz. Em 2007 ingressa na ESMAE em jazz (voz) e em 2009 é-lhe concedida uma bolsa para estudar na conceituada Berklee College of Music em Boston. Depois de estudar a arte do jazz e “scat singing” através da transcrição de solos da Ella Fitzgerald, Kurt Elling, Bobby McFerrin decidiu compor os seus próprios temas e fazer arranjos de temas de Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver e Keith Jarrett tendo rapidamente descoberto a sua paixão pela escrita de letras e execução de “vocalese”. Enquanto esteve em Boston gravou o seu primeiro CD intitulado “In my garden” que conta com a participação de Greg Osby e Jason Palmer. Em 2011 foi admitida no mestrado em canto jazz no "Royal Conservatory of the Hague" Holanda, terminando o mesmo em 2013. Desde do lançamento do seu álbum de estreia tem atuado em vários países incluindo Austrália, França, Luxemburgo, Portugal e Holanda.
